Cultural Property Acquisitions : Navigating the Shifting Landscape

Description

Museum staff--whether new to the field or working with collections for decades--are often overwhelmed by the complexities of acquiring cultural property, particularly antiquities and archaeological material. Collecting practices now require a greater degree of transparency and cooperation with various stakeholders than in the past, and are under greater scrutiny to be in line with current legal requirements and ethical expectations. This book provides a concise, unbiased, and practical resource for those tasked with navigating the complicated and rapidly changing legal and ethical landscape governing the acquisition of cultural property and archaeological material.

The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural awakening among African Americans between the two world wars. It was the cultural phase of the "New Negro" movement, a social and political phenomenon that promoted a proud racial identity, economic independence, and progressive politics. In this Very Short Introduction, Cheryl A. Wall captures the Harlem Renaissance's zeitgeist by identifying issues and strategies that engaged writers, musicians, Practical Problem Solving in HPLC pdf and visual artists alike. She introduces key figures such as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, and Jean Toomer, along with such signature texts as "Mother to Son," "Harlem Shadows," and Cane. In examining the "New Negro," she looks at the art of photographer James Van der Zee and painters Archibald Motley and Laura Wheeler and the way Marita Bonner, Jessie Fauset, and Nella Larsen explored the dilemmas of gender identity for New Negro women. Focusing on Harlem as a cultural capital, Wall covers theater in New York, where black musicals were produced on Broadway almost every year during the 1920s.

So the Wind Won't Blow it All Away pdf

Richard Brautigan,Jeffrey Lent: So the Wind Won't Blow it All Away

So the Wind Won't Blow it All Away

Description

So the Wind Won't Blow it all Away is a beautifully-written, brooding gem of a novel - set in the Pacific Northwest region of Oregon where Brautigan spent most of his childhood. Through the eyes, ears and voice of Brautigan's youthful protagonist the reader is gently led into a small-town tale where the narrator accidentally shoots dead his best friend with a gun. The novel deals with the repercussions of this tragedy and its recurring theme of 'What if...' fuels anguish, regret and self-blame as well as some darkly comic passages of bitter-sweet romance and despair. Taken with the recently discovered, An Unfortunate Woman, these two late Brautigan novels are a fitting epitaph to a complex, contradictory and often misunderstood genius.

He argues that from the earliest treatises of political theory, notably in Aristotle's notion of man as a political animal, and throughout the history of Western thinking about sovereignty (whether of the king or the state), a notion of sovereignty as power over "life" is implicit. The reason it remains merely implicit has to do, according to Agamben, with the way the sacred, or the idea of sacrality, becomes indissociable from the idea of sovereignty. Drawing upon Carl Schmitt's idea of the sovereign's status as the exception So the Wind Won't Blow it All Away free download pdf to the rules he safeguards, and on anthropological research that reveals the close interlinking of the sacred and the taboo, Agamben defines the sacred person as one who can be killed and yet not sacrificed-a paradox he sees as operative in the status of the modern individual living in a system that exerts control over the collective "naked life" of all individuals.

Post-Photography: The Artist with a Camera

Description

The real world is full of cameras; the virtual world is full of images. Where does all this photographic activity leave the artist-photographer? Post-Photography tries to answer that question by investigating the exciting new language of photographic image-making that is emerging in the digital age of anything-ispossible and everything-has-been-done-before. Found imagery has become increasingly important in post-photographic practice, with the internet serving as a laboratory for a major kind of imagemaking experimentation. But artists also continue to create entirely original works using avant-garde techniques drawn from both the digital and analogue eras. This book is split into five sections Something Borrowed, Something New; Layers of Reality; All the World Is Staged; Hand and Eye; and Post- Photojournalism which cover the key strategies adopted by 53 of the most exciting and innovative international artist-photographers of the 21st century.

-- YOKO ONO A national best-seller that was featured on such lists as The New York Times, the Los Post-Photography: The Artist with a Camera ebook pdf Angeles Times, The Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Boston Globe, and Publishers Weekly, The Sexual Life of Catherine M. was the controversial sleeper hit of the year. A graphic account of sex stripped of sentiment, of a life of physical gratification and a relentlessly honest look at the consequences -- both liberating and otherwise -- have created this candid, powerful, and deeply intelligent depiction of unfettered sexuality.

The Man Who Tapped the Secrets of the Universe

Description

2011 Reprint of 1946 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Walter Russell (1871-1963) was an American polymath, known for his achievements in painting, sculpture, architecture, and for his unified theory in physics and cosmogony. He posited that the universe was founded on a unifying principle of rhythmic balanced interchange. This physical theory, laid out primarily in his books The Secret of Light (1947) and The Message of the Divine Iliad (1948-49), has not been accepted by mainstream scientists. Russell asserted that this was mainly due to differences between himself and scientists in their assumptions about the existence of mind or matter. Russell was also proficient in philosophy, music, ice skating, and was a professor at the institution he founded, the University of Science and Philosophy. He believed mediocrity is self-inflicted and genius is self-bestowed. In 1963, Walter Cronkite in the national television evening news, commenting on Dr. Walter Russell's death, referred to him as ..". the Leonardo da Vinci of our time."

Louis L'Amour: Sackett: The Sacketts: A Novel

Sackett: The Sacketts: A Novel

Description

In "Sackett," Louis L Amour introduces readers to a wandering man with a desire to settle down and build a good life. Hard circumstances have made William Tell Sackett a drifter, but now he hungers for a place he can t name yet knows he has to find. South of the Tetons he comes upon a ghost of a trail that leads him through a keyhole pass into a lonely, alien, yet beautiful valley a valley that holds a fortune in gold. Then he finds an even greater treasure: beautiful Ange Kerry, a courageous and resourceful woman. Yet the harsh ways it takes to preserve his claim and his life could be the one thing that drives Ange away forever."

Disney/Pixar's "Inside Out" takes you to a place that everyone knows, but no one has ever seen: the world inside the human mind. Girls and boys ages 8 to 12 will love this nonfiction feelings survival guide featuring advice from the Emotions. Vetted by an industry expert, this hardcover book is 64 pages, features full-color illustrations, and has all the heart and humor of Disney/Pixar's "Inside Out"! / It discloses such tell-tale signs of a lack of interest as 'He's Just Not That Into You If He's Not Calling You,' or 'If He's Not Dating You,' 'If He Only Wants To See You When He's Drunk,' 'If He's Having Sex With Someone Else,' not to mention Sackett: The Sacketts: A Novel free pdf 'If He's Married.' / Practical advice: reveals how to interpret the 'mystery' signals men give off that are shouting the obvious. / Just like Berger on SATC, helpfully (and outrageously) informing Miranda of a guy she liked that "he's just not into you," this book will show you how to eliminate the no-hopers, and give you the confidence to move onto those who recognise how gorgeous you are!

The Miracle Cures of Dr. Aira

Description

Cesar Aira s newest novel in English is not about a conventional doctor. Single, in his forties, and poor, Dr. Aira is a skeptic. His personality his weaknesses, whims, and pet peeves is summed up in a series of digressions and regressions but he has a very special gift for miracles. He no longer cares about miracles, however, and has no faith in them. Perhaps he is even a little ashamed about his supernatural powers. Such is Dr. Aira, who also has to confront his arch-enemy chief of the Pinero Hospital, Dr. Actyn who is constantly trying to prove that Dr. Aira is a charlatan. Poor Dr. Aira is indeed a worker of miracles, but Cesar Aira the magesterial author sends the very human doctor stumbling toward the biggest trap of all, in this magical book."
